Hi Izzy, tell us about who you are and how you started your business?

I’m a 19-year-old from Sydney Australia and I run a content creation (UGC) business and coaching business. I graduated high school just over a year ago and decided to take a gap year so I could travel. Even though I did well in school, I didn’t want to go to uni because I’d always dreamed of working for myself and I felt going to uni would push me into the corporate 9-5 life.

I started UGC (user-generated content) at 18 years old when I was fresh out of high school and started my coaching business at 19. I worked very hard at UGC and managed to become successful at it pretty quickly, which is when I realised I wanted to help others achieve the same success as me by coaching them to do the same! I started my business with no money as UGC is free to start – I had to invest money for my coaching business however thanks to UGC I already had the money to do this.

What Is Your Website?

How did you come up with the idea for your business?

I’d always wanted to work for myself and be my own boss but I just never knew how. I felt growing up that everyone seemed to have a profession they wanted to go into e.g nurse, teacher but none of that ever interested me.

I used to tell people when they asked what I was going to be when I grow up that I’d be ‘rich and successful’. When I graduated high school I tried out a few things such as dropshipping but it didn’t work. One day I saw something called UGC pop up on my TikTok feed and I decided to give it a go.

I had no previous experience with content creation (except posting on my personal social media accounts) and I had no idea whatsoever about all the business and legal side of things – I was pretty much just figuring it out as I went along!

Were there any driving forces behind your motivation to start your business?

My parents wanted me to go to uni because I did well in school and that’s the only way they thought was possible to be successful – go to uni, get a high paying 9-5 job working for someone else.

I didn’t want to go to uni because I felt like a waste of time and money for me, I knew it was possible to make money online without a degree. I took a gap year and told my parents that if I can make money online this year I don’t have to go to uni, but if I can’t do it then I’ll have to go to uni.

So that was a massive motivating factor for me because I didn’t want to go to uni. I was just so determined to work for myself because I knew I could do it and always felt deep down I was meant to be successful working for myself. I always just wanted to freedom that comes with working for yourself and not being part of the ‘rat race’ which was a massive motivating factor for me.

Talk us through the process of building your product/service?

I honestly just came across UGC on my for you page one day and spontaneously decided to try it on a random Thursday! I did some research but honestly just jumped in and learnt how to do everything along the way. Looking back now, I did make a lot of mistakes and it would’ve saved me a lot of time and money if I had someone help me! My coaching business is a different story.

I’d been approached by a lot of people wanting to help me create a course/coaching program and I’d also had so many of my followers ask for more help with UGC. So after months of being asked to do it, I came up with my mentorship program. I faced a lot of challenges on the way such as people not paying, dropping out, people not showing up for calls but I keep trying new things and I constantly keep improving!

Discuss your marketing strategy..

I do all organic marketing on my social media accounts for both my UGC and coaching businesses. I find TikTok to be more beneficial for UGC as I’m able to demonstrate my content creation skills better there, whereas instagram is great for getting people into my coaching programs.

For UGC, I get all my clients from them just seeing my social media and checking out my portfolio and wanting to work with me. For coaching, I’ve spent a long time building up a community on my social media accounts so when I launched my mentorship program, there was so much interest, I actually had nearly 400 applications to work with me when I launched!

Revenue & Financials

My UGC business tends to vary depending on how much time I spend on it. Monthly income from UGC varies between $5000 – $10,000 a month. I launched my mentorship program 30th October so last month was my first month, but I managed to secure $28,000 in November from coaching!

Talk to us about any challenges you faced along the process?

I’ve learnt so much since starting both my businesses, I’ve had to learn content creation, sales, copyrighting and marketing. One of the main lessons I’ve learnt is that nothing ever really goes as expected, there will always be challenges and things you struggle with but it’s about being able to get through them without giving up.

I think starting my mentorship program was a pivotal point in my entrepreneur journey as this was when I had to start understanding advanced marketing techniques, I had to learn sales, started thinking about the psychology of people buying, and had to put systems in place to automate and run things properly. I made a lot of mistakes with my coaching business. I

have a mentorship program which has done pretty smoothly, but I also have a group coaching community which I’ve faced challenges with. Lots of things have gone wrong, or not as well as expected in terms of getting people into my programs, but every time something goes wrong, it’s a learning opportunity to improve it and fix the problem.

I’m a pretty motivated person, but there are sometimes where I feel like giving up. I’m very disciplined so that I keep going even when it gets tough. I’m lucky with my content creation business that everything has always gone pretty well, so besides from getting burnt out, I’ve never had problems with motivation. With my coaching business, I’ve got imposter syndrome and sometimes felt like giving up when things go wrong, but I have an amazing member of my marketing team who always picks me up and starts thinking of how we can improve instead of dwelling on the fact things aren’t going right. He is a massive source of motivation for me.

Favourite books, resources, tools?

Russel Brunson – dot com secrets. Taught me everything I know about marketing, and has been extremely helpful in improving my marketing and sales skills. I use Clickfunnels for my marketing for my coaching programs, and Skool to run my group coaching community. For my UGC business, social media, notion, and CapCut are my best friends.

How many hours do you work per week on your business?

60-70+ hours.

What is the biggest challenge you are facing at the moment in your business?

Having enough time to get everything done. Although they’re linked, I’m technically running two businesses and trying to do them both full-time. I struggle with getting burnt out by working too much as there’s always so much to do and not enough time to do it!

Any advice for entrepreneurs who want to start a business?

Just start and figure it out along the way! I had no idea what I was doing when I first started my businesses but I’ve learnt so much by just figuring it out along the way. It’s not going to be easy and things are going to go wrong but it’s all part of the process. If it was all smooth sailing it wouldn’t be as rewarding when things go right!!

Are you hiring at the moment?

No
